CII advocates Food Safety & Quality for All as India prepares for
Commonwealth Games 2010

Chief Guest Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Chief Minister of Delhi flagged off the Food Safety Run & Walkathon organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on the occasion of the celebration of World Food Day on 16 October in the India Gate lawns. The event was themed on “Food Safety & Quality for All – India Prepares for Commonwealth Games 2010”.
 

‘CII in collaboration with the Ministry of Food Processing Industries is delighted to be celebrating World Food Day on 16th October across the country. These celebrations will create widespread national awareness on Food Safety and Quality with greater understanding of consumer rights and actions. Educational institutions, eateries and Industry will be further empowered with the knowledge and importance of Food Safety and Quality. All this, especially in light of the ensuing Commonwealth Games, will ensure a step towards India becoming a Safe Food destination.’

CII’s focus in this World Food Month is to help Delhi State Government prepare Delhi as a Safe Food Destination and CII pledges its support to upgrade Food Processing and Servicing Establishments to safe and quality standards of food.’

The event was attended by around 2,500 participants including school children, senior citizens, and people from other walks of life. Guidelines on Food Safety & Quality for Schools, Colleges and Food Safety Tips for All booklets were distributed amongst the participants with the message of maintaining food quality standards. Flagging off the Walkathon was followed by Cultural Shows on Martial Art, Yoga, Fancy Dress, Roller skating & Painting Competitions accompanied by a prize distribution ceremony.

CII’s Institute of Quality, through this initiative presented its perspective for safe, hygienic, and quality food availability. With New Delhi to host the Commonwealth Games 2010, this event was an endeavor to brand Indian cuisine as nutritious, healthy and hygienic. An oath taking ceremony was also held during the event to position India as a safe food destination for the upcoming games, by adhering to food safety norms at all the food serving establishments and at home.

Food Safety and Quality Oath
    

On this World Food Day, 16th October 2009,
 we solemnly promise that
 we shall all strive to position India as a Safe Food Destination,
 in our preparation for the Commonwealth Games 2010,
 by practicing Food Safety and Quality,
in all Food Processing and Serving Establishments, in our Homes, Schools and Colleges and in all aspects of our Professional and Personal lives.

Mr. K N Shenoy, Chairman, CII Institute of Quality stated that the day’s celebrations would further strengthen the quality movement in India. India should remain committed to the cause of food safety and quality by inculcating world class quality consciousness.

Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII said that the day brought a significant opportunity for the capital city to bring about consciousness and awareness on health, food safety and quality standards. CII through the Institute of Quality had been proactively driving the concept of quality over the last two decades.
 
The Celebration across the country directly impacted over 65,000 people. It was celebrated by CII across 36 cities hosting 44 programmes. As part of the celebration, IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering Tourism Corporation) too widely circulated CII produced promotional material, posters, and booklets besides handing out CII prepared guidelines to 25,000 travellers on Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains on the 16 of October. The Young Indian arm of CII (Yi) also played a stellar role in reaching the Food Safety & Quality messages across the country.

World Food Day was proclaimed in 1979 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It marks the date of the founding of FAO in 1945. The aim of the Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor, Celebrity Chef and nutritionist Dr. Shikha Sharma were also present on the occasion to support the cause. Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor, stated that the celebrations held on the World Food Day by CII highlighted the concern for positioning India as a healthy nation. According to him, a healthy country must pay attention to hygiene, preparation and lifestyle issues in light of food consumption. People should make themselves and their food healthier by sensitizing themselves towards wholesome aspects of food, he added. Dr. Shikha Sharma, Co-Chairman - Healthcare, Yi & Managing Director, Nutri-Health Systems Pvt Ltd opined during the event that good and healthy food provides lifetime benefits. She also requested the gathering to take  pledge not to waste food and utilize it in a healthy way.
